17 countries. The ones people already know. Good warmup.

17 questions · 5 min · press A, B, C, or D
Built on research. With a dash of irreverence.
This quiz tests factual geographic knowledge: country locations, borders, and capitals within Western Europe. Seventeen questions means one per country covered. Your score reflects actual familiarity with the region, whether from travel, study, or just paying attention to maps. This isn't measuring aptitude — it's measuring what you already know.
One question per country
Each of the 17 Western European countries gets a dedicated question. No country appears twice. Scoring your accuracy on each is the basis for the tier system.
Three distractor types
Wrong answers vary: geographically close countries, capitals of other nations, or completely unrelated territory. This prevents random guessing and makes accuracy meaningful.
Cumulative scoring
Results are pure percentages. 90%+ is Cartographer. 70-89% is Seasoned Traveler. 40-69% is Occasional Globetrotter. Below 40% is Atlas Rookie. No partial credit.

Frequently asked
Why is this called easy mode?
Western Europe contains the countries most English speakers already know — the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain. If you've done any traveling, watched European news, or played any strategy games, you've likely encountered these names. Harder Europe quizzes would include the Balkans, Central Europe, or ask you to distinguish between shapes from memory alone.
Why are there 17 countries if you only mention 13?
The thirteen you see listed are the major ones. The quiz also includes four Scandinavian countries (Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark) and a few microstates (Luxembourg, Andorra, Switzerland). Together they make 17. The tagline mentions them because they complete the western European boundary.
Is Iceland actually in Western Europe?
Geographically and culturally, yes. Iceland sits in the North Atlantic and is part of the broader Nordic region. It's politically Western-aligned and often grouped with Scandinavian countries in regional analysis. Some definitions exclude it, but for this quiz it's included as part of the Atlantic-facing Western European sphere.
What should I do with my result?
Use it as a baseline. If you scored Cartographer, you probably don't need to study. If you scored Atlas Rookie, a physical map and fifteen minutes of labeling will move you toward Occasional Globetrotter quickly. Most people improve dramatically just by caring enough to look once.
