// definition

A/B/O (Alpha, Beta, Omega) is the shorthand for omegaverse dynamics in fanfiction. This quiz uses a more granular 15-question format to distinguish between alpha-alpha, omega-alpha (rare), and beta subtypes, alongside the three primary dynamics.

// how this works

Built on research. With a dash of irreverence.

This quiz measures behavioral patterns that have appeared consistently in A/B/O fandom since the omegaverse exploded circa 2010. It's a cultural framework, not clinical. The 15-question format lets us distinguish between primary dynamics and also catch the messier parts — the alpha who's burnt out from leading, the omega who's actually running the show from behind the scenes, the beta who's anything but basic.

01

Behavioral over self-report

Every question describes how you actually move through conflict, responsibility, and relationships — not your aspirations or how you think you should be. The omegaverse works because it's grounded in real observable stuff, not abstract values.

02

Weighted toward specificity

Some answers matter more diagnostically than others. Your response to conflict weighs heavier than party behavior — that's where dynamics actually show up. The scoring reflects what A/B/O fandom has consistently treated as load-bearing traits.

03

No omega slander

This quiz assumes omegas aren't soft or weak, just different. Fanfic's best omegas are the emotional intelligences driving the group. We coded questions to avoid the tired trope where omegas are just submissive foils.

Frequently asked

What's the actual difference between the three dynamics?

Alpha: leads by presence, needs to be in control, feels responsible for the group. Beta: stabilizes everything without needing credit, sees systems others miss. Omega: feels deeply, makes it safe for others to be vulnerable, often the group's emotional glue. In fandom they've taken on biological markers, but the core is behavioral — how you relate to authority, emotion, and responsibility.

Is this some kind of BDSM thing?

A/B/O started as a kink trope in Supernatural fic — it originally included explicit heat dynamics and mating rituals. But it's evolved. Now it shows up in non-sexual contexts all the time: AUs where characters navigate workplace hierarchies, family dynamics, friendships. Some fics keep the spicy stuff, some don't. It's a framework, not a single story.

Can you be a different dynamic with different people?

In theory, maybe. In practice, most fandom writers settle on one dynamic per character because consistency matters for the narrative. But this quiz is measuring you, not a character you're writing. Most people do have a pretty stable way they move through the world — though you might be more alpha at work and more omega with close friends. Your result is your baseline.

Is omega the weakest dynamic?

No. That's fanfic misreading. The best omega-centered fic treats them as the axis everyone orbits around — they're not weak, they're perceptive in ways alphas and betas aren't. If your result is omega, it means you have emotional intelligence and influence that doesn't require volume. That's not weakness, that's a different kind of power.
